Home for Christmas

What is more lovely than Christmas by the seaside....

Coastal Christmas elegance.

The haven we call home captures a special space in our hearts.

As, surrounded by all we hold most dear, we gather with loved ones during this magical time of the year.

Our spirits soar amidst the expectant wonder and pre-Christmas anticipation.  That buzz in the air is tangible.

This special time means so many things - fellowship, feasting, giving and receiving, a time of good cheer, loving your family and home!  Enjoy!.

Then, after we rest for a little while, take a few deep breaths and welcome in the New Year with more good cheer!!  Hooray!

Aqua Decorating

From Retro and Vintage, Cottage to Modern,
Beach to Hollywood Regency,
Mediterranean and Moroccan,
let us meet the versatile blue green hue

which colours water - AQUA.

Accessories add character
Is it Green, or is it blue? Being on the cool side of the spectrum, it turns down the heat in summers and makes small spaces appear larger- perfect for the bayside. Nothing emphasises the magic of coastal living like splashes of aqua in décor pieces, accent walls, cushions, towels, tiles, lamps. Against a background of white or off-white and a mixture of natural materials and fibres, aqua really pops. A perfect example of this is Thea and Sami Aqualicious Fretwork fabric shown here.

Not Surprisingly, aqua can give a retro feel to spaces because many vintage items from the 40s to 70s have hints of aqua. Can you remember this? The Hollywood Regency style used plush aqua in furnishing fabrics, wallpaper, sometimes with pink and black!! – very dramatic and lux.
Dark Furniture mixes beautifully with aqua, relieving the deep colour in the furniture. This is very useful in lounges and bedrooms.

In Mediterranean style, you can combine mandarin orange and vibrant aqua (on the blue side)- a popular pair this summer.

Navy and White Decor

The navy is here and summer time is not far away!

Give your space the new summer look of classic navy and white. An oldie but a goodie; always a favourite of mine, navy blue and white can be used in any room for a cooling,
calming effect - clean and crisp, but casual and very livable.

White plantation cane lounge, navy upholstery and white piping.

Recently we fell in love with this gorgeous white plantation cane lounge, with navy upholstery. So Queensland! The bright white of the cane offsets the darkening effect of the navy blue to create a dramatically stylish statement.

Imagine lying back on your porch, pavilion, verandah, feet up, relaxing in this classic piece of furniture, sipping a 5 o’clock sauvignon blanc!!

Striking floor rug, white cane foot stool

You can adapt this palette to your home as it works well in lounge, dining, bedrooms and bathrooms. Choose accessories in the room which do not fight or overwhelm. Dark wood furniture looks striking against navy and white. Nautical themed items can also be suitable.

Add visual interest and character with carefully chosen mirrors, wall art, candles, clocks, cushions, lamps, throws and floor rugs. Let your soft furnishings and cushions sing the blues with a range of textures and patterns harmonizing, without being too matchy.

A little lime to add some zing

Accessories add character

Hang breezy white sheers at the windows and doors for that summery relaxing ambience. Be brave and paint a feature wall in a deep indigo colour - great for a study or office. Be sure to contrast this with lots of white.

Harmonising blues
To make this scene really sing, you could add a very small amount of contrasting colour such as daffodil yellow, lime green, bright orange or hot pink. Perhaps navy and white, handsome as it is, can work its magic at your home.

Industrial Nautical Style

Let's go sailing into the Industrial Nautical Age of the 21st century.

What’s that? Well, simply a rustic, metallic distressed edge is added to the quintessential nautical style, creating a casually handsome boathouse ambiance.

Just in time for father’s day!
Time worn vintage leather chair
The core of this industrial style is to expose those elements which are usually hidden from view! Exposed brickwork and beams, nuts, bolts, wheels and mechanisms which have seen their day can once again be appreciated for their practical beauty. It may also be called uprecycling.

Nautical objects of this nature are probably abundant in our Bayside homes. Some examples maybe vintage bulkhead lights, all sorts of old boat and marine fittings, rustic model (and real) boats, lanterns, distressed wood, leather and rope, maps, globes, oars, nets etc.

Pendant lighting provides a warm focal point
Colours of the nautical scheme traditionally revolve around shades of blue and white with accents of red, but one can be more neutral with taupes, beiges, greys and white.

Work these colours within your soft furnishings and décor items. Our nautically inspired fabrics, model boats, faux wood grain wallpaper and worn leather chair all contribute to the warmth and interest of this bespoke sailor’s sanctuary

Bahamas Style at Miraje

Ahh... the aura of an island vista!

We have drifted to a tropical resort and perched ourselves
under the fronds of the iconic palm tree.

Enter a world of relaxed luxury and serenity

with the style of the Bahamas.

One of the original purveyors of this tropical chic, Tommy Bahamas Home uses abundant natural motifs and woven materials to reflect a natural coastal environment. With a less is more approach and a few carefully chosen accessories, a feeling of lush minimalism makes an instant impression.

Your room décor can be easily styled around this Bahamian feel. Using light airy colours on walls, breezy light sheers and natural fibres in furnishings, you can create your own mini resort. Apart from the obvious palm tree motif, one could use banana leaf, pineapple, bamboo or monkey images on soft furnishings and ottomans. Avoid overdoing these accents. Green, ranging from light sage to avocado, yellow, greens to almost black, is a major element in these patterns.

We have used black and dark brown as accents to bring an air of elegance to this tropical scene. Make your upholstery sumptuous and comfortable, not spartan.

Choose lighting in wood, cane, antique metal or ceramics. Appeal to the senses with candles and diffusers from Ecoya and Palm Beach. Take all this outside to your covered outdoor area or pavilion with the fabulous outdoor fabrics and furniture now available.

Hamptons in Cleveland

Owing to the popularity of our recent Hamptons blog at the start of June, I am posting a few more images.
These are of my home - Bayside Redlands.

Although it is called a 'Queenslander' it would fit
quite comfortably in the Hamptons.

Decorating - Hamptons Style

This month, we explore the casual, yet stylishly enduring light and airy ambiance of the Hamptons, a coastal region in the
US featured in the TV drama Revenge.

Known as the preferred vacation retreat for the New York elite,
the Hamptons on Long Island is a home to many
picturesque beach side homes – well mansions!

The idea starts here with these samples - beautiful linens

Architecturally infused with classical elegance, the interiors of these abodes owe much of their aura of relaxed luxury to the retrained use of colour, and careful selection of fabrics, textiles, furniture and accessories.

Everything starting to shape in the window display at Miraje!!

Colour-wise, everything is quite simple with whites off whites, pale neutrals teamed with accents of pale green, duck egg blue, light greys and grayish blues. These tranquil colours of similar tonal value give a feeling of spaciousness and evoke images of a cloudy misty day on the shore – quite like Cleveland lately.

Custom upholstery, cushions and curtains

Full length curtains in sheers floating in the breeze, or fully lined drapes for insulation are well suited. Blend them with your wall colour. Also Roman blinds in an interesting textile can feature. Cotton and lined fabrics in crisp white to soft natural hues contribute to the warmth, luxury and comfort.

Tieback tassels add that finishing touch

Add a plush upholstered linen sofa, a couple bespoke wing backs, some comfy cushions, as eclectic mix of beach nautical finds, woven baskets, rustic pieces, touches of wood and you can pretend you too are on holiday at the Hamptons.

Decorating - Moroccan Style

Enjoy the intoxicating blend of colour, texture
and pattern or Moroccan style décor.

Morocco has always been at the crossroads of so many cultures
and has subsequently developed its own unique
and extravagant decorating style.

The jewel like colours of turquoise blue, ox blood red, orange, emerald green and pink mixed with shimming gold, silver and copper are exemplified in our dazzling display of home furnishings and accessories in our front window display.

Texture and pattern are also vital in creating the richness and mystique of Morocco. Cushions of silk brocade and velvet, colourful glassware, ceramics and mosaics, ornately designed mirrors, intricate pressed metal work, inlaid bone, wrought iron, ottoman’s and the fascinating lanterns are distinctive features of this style.

Take the time to come in and absorb the magical world of Morocco. Create an oasis in the sand dunes of suburban living with some of these touches.

A delightful injection of fun for an indoor and outdoor spot.

As we approach winter, the warmth and relaxed ambiance of this style will take the chill out of the air.
